Fiddlers ReStrung Offering Special Summer Reading Program Performances for Michigan Libraries

Saline, MI - In the spirit of community service and giving back to Michigan during these trying economic times, Fiddlers ReStrung has created an exciting new program to provide low cost concerts to Michigan public libraries to support their summer reading programs.

Affiliated with Saline Area Schools, Fiddlers Restrung () is a 17-piece ensemble, made up entirely of Saline High School students.  They proudly display a diverse arrangement of styles: American Bluegrass, Celtic fiddle, popular folk, Appalachian Step-dancing and Progressive Acoustic.  These musicians are also top scholars and athletes and all share in producing a unique ensemble that is truly their own.  Working alongside leadership, students craft their own arrangements and help make organizational decisions.  They engage their audiences with energy and witty charm, advocating a message of spontaneous enthusiasm born of a genuine live performance.  This is what educators, community supporters and event organizers have said about Fiddlers ReStrung:

“Fiddlers ReStrung is by far the most popular assembly we've had here at DHMC! The talent and showmanship of the performers is truly impressive. Our school anxiously awaits your third visit!”

-Robb Rhone, Dearborn Heights Montessori Center

"There were a big hit here.  Heard nothing but rave reviews.  People were coming in off the street when they heard the music.  It was the largest crowd we ever had on a Saturday afternoon.  The fiddlers fit right in to the family theme."

-Kalamazoo (Michigan) Ribfest organizers, 2008.

The Fiddlers ReStrung “…enthusiasm and pure joy of music is infectious and our students catch it - they cannot stay in their seats when the music begins to play.  They’re up dancing, spinning and jumping.  At any other concert, someone would be telling them to go back to their seats and just listen, but not with Fiddlers ReStrung.  This group encourages the dancing because they enjoy seeing it.

- Sharon Hegwood, teaching assistant at Burger School for Students with Autism, Garden City, Michigan

The 2009 theme for the Children's Program in Michigan is "Be Creative @ Your Library".  One of the program elements suggested by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) for this year is titled "I've Got Rhythm: Music and Rhythm."  In creating this program specifically for public libraries, Fiddlers ReStrung will perform a 50 minute lively educational program featuring fiddle music capturing our American folk culture.  Performers will reach out to children in the audience with stories about their own musical background and the musical selections they perform.

Our goal in providing these concerts for public libraries is to give back to the communities in the state of Michigan and provide a low cost program that will support the summer reading programs.  For libraries in Michigan, we are lowering our standard fees to help libraries offer a quality educational and entertaining program, especially when budgets are flat or shrinking. Performances for Michigan public libraries are $200 (additional travel fees may apply if 30+ miles outside of Saline).
